There are various factors that can affects one sleep. Good sleep has various advantages. A recent research has linked good sleep to prospective memory ( i.e a skill to remember to do something).The research states that sleep enhances prospective memory. Prospective memory includes such things as remembering to take a medicine, buying a Mothers day card, or binging home ice cream for a birhthday party. Hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar could wake you up in the night feeling hungry. Caffeine drinks like coffee, tea, cola, cocoa, excessive salt, vitamin B deficiency and calcium deficiency are some of the common causes of insomnia. Calcium deficiency could be due to poor absorption or due to nutrition Food addictives, coloring and preservatives can also cause insomnia. Calcium can induce sleep. Phosphatidylserine is useful for those who can’t sleep because of high cortisone levels usually induced by stress. In the evening have bananas, figs, dates, yoghurt, milk, tuna or whole grain crackers, since they have tryptophan. Tryptophan produce sleep harmone melatonin Have chamomile tea before going to bed, it calms your digestive system and relieves your muscle tension. Vitamin B6, B12 and B5 can also prevent insomnia. Legumes, peanuts, nutritional yeast, fish which contain B3 can give good sleep. Meditation and soothing music on regular basis can also give you pleasant sleep. Regular massages with mustard, sesame or coconut oil are useful for sleep. Those who have heavy meal at night require more sleep. Non vegetarians require more sleep than vegetarians. Further if the mattress and pillow are not comfortable they too can affect sleep. A pillow that’s too big or bulky can cause children toss and turn in their sleep. Also there should be enough darkness for a sound sleep. Darkness triggers the release of melatonin.
Kids too can suffer from insomnia. Apart from the above causes their superheroes and also affect their sleep. Their poster plastered over walls make it difficult for the children’s to switch off so try to avoid posters for their heroes in the bedroom. Children usually have night rime growing pains in calf muscles. This is assumed that they are caused when the skeleton grows faster than muscles. Although harmless the sensation can keep children awake. Pain killers like paracetamol, or massaging of legs can be soothing for them. Colors and shades can also affect sleep. Red and hot pink make it difficult for kids to calm down. Ideal colors are pale shades of green and pink. Parents should try to be with their child when he is going to sleep. Bedtime is the time when all the secrets come out. Casual talk with your child will calm him. In the process children learn to deal with problems that may be trivial for you but may be of great importance to them. Further children don’t want to go to bed simply because they want to be with their parents, so give them quality attention every night, they will accept bedtime more easily. Don;t let them watch TV or play computer games before bed instead of having that special time.
